Welcome!

Welcome to LAWR-I. This guide discusses:

1. How to research California and federal case law in Westlaw™ and Lexis  (database) including Boolean logic, filtering tools, symbols, etc.

2. How to research California Codes and federal statues in  Westlaw™ and Lexis™, including codes/statutes that have been recodified or have prior versions

3. How to research secondary sources in Westlaw™ and Lexis™, including tracking primary sources and selecting secondary sources

Difference between Primary and Secondary Sources of Law

Primary sources establish the law.  They include cases, statutes, regulations, treaties, and constitutions.  Relevant primary sources have the greatest influence on the outcome of any legal issue.  Secondary sources explain the law but do not themselves establish binding law.
