Computer Science Student Making Showcase

Fall 2020

COVID-19 changed the course of all our lives in an unexpected yet very rewarding way. From fighting for toilet paper and practicing social distancing to taking online classes and working virtually, 2020 taught us all a valuable lesson about striving to be productive even in times of difficulty. It taught us that in times of adversity we can all persevere as long as we work together. 2020 was about adapting to the new, somewhat intimidating, world of technology. As a community the Makerspace worked day and night to ensure that everyone had the resources to maximize the virtual learning experience of students at the University Of La Verne.  

We are very proud to announce that the Makerspace worked with many talented Computer Science students during the Pandemic. All of these students were a part of the amazing internship program offered by the Makerspace.  We are extremely honored to have worked with every single one of these students during Fall of 2020 and to have gotten the opportunity to witness and support their outstanding work ethic. They created innovative projects that not only reflect their intellect but also their hunger for knowledge and ambition for growth. Please join us as we present their projects below.

Chat Logs


Natural Language Processing - Analyzing Chat Logs

Project Description:

The Wilson Library website has a feature where students can ask librarians the questions they have. The website stores these conversations into XML files ranging from 2003-2014. Initially the goal was to store the data in a SQL database for more convenient storage then I began to use topic modeling concepts to find more meaning in the data that could benefit the library in assisting students. I used a well known topic modeling API called Gensim and was able to make two models using the chat log data: one for the librarian text and one for the student text. The model is capable of telling us what words are associated with a certain input word. For example: words associated with the student inputted text with the input word review are journal, literature, class, writing ,business, and studies.

Database Administration

Project Description:

Worked with 3 databases including the ezproxy logs, chat logs, and conference proposal management system. I created the queries and tables for each database using SQL in mySQL workbench. I also researched and set up a Google Cloud account for the Makerspace. I connected the mySQL databases to the Google Cloud so that they are running constantly.

3D Printed RC Tank

3D Printed RC Tank

Project Description:

The overwhelming majority of the parts on this RC Tank are going to be 3d printed, including the wheels and the treads. Some few parts may not such as metal rods used as guides for movement and pins to lock the treads together. It will all be programmed using an Arduino in its basic form, then moving to a raspberry pi + Arduino combo for it’s final version. In the end this project hopes to turn out a fully functioning, all terrain 3d printed RC tank! With the added bonus of a few cameras, long range control, and high speeds to make the tank as much fun as a high end RC car!

The purpose of this project was to create a tampon storage box that can help the user to change tampons on time. The main components of this tampon change reminder were Arduino Uno, Sim800L GSM module, 9V battery, and a box.

Project Description:

The purpose of this project was to create a sensor that can send a text message of current water temperature to the user’s phone number, it allows the user to get the current water temperature anywhere and anytime. The main components of this sensor were Arduino Uno, Sim800L GSM module, DHT11 water temperature and humidity module, 9V battery, Ziploc bag and Arduino IDE software.
