Template

Author(s). Title. Journal Name [using NLM abbreviations]. Year;vol(issue No.):inclusive pages. URL or DOI [Omit URLs and DOIs from your citation if it's a link to a library resource]. Published [date]. Updated [date]. Accessed [date].

NOTE: Omit "Published" and "Updated" dates if information is not supplied. "Accessed" date not required if DOI is present.

General AMA Rules

Authors

  • List author names starting with the last name followed by first and middle initials, no periods.
    • If there are more than six authors, list the first three followed by et al.
    • Example: Jordan CJ, Cao J, Newman AH, et al.

Capitalization

Other

  • Retain the spelling, abbreviations, and style used in the original resource title.
  • Include inclusive page numbers (i.e., the start and end page numbers).
  • Reference the most specific part when possible (i.e., cite the chapter within the book).

URLs & DOIs

  • Only include accessible links.
