Brain on Fire

This book is about Cahalan's hardship with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis and the process by which she was diagnosed with this form of encephalitis. She wakes up in a hospital with no recollection of the previous month’s events. During those times she had violent episodes and delusions. It follows the struggle of her getting misdiagnosed, which she was by various physicians. They were misdiagnosing her with several theories like "partying too much" and schizoaffective disorder. After several physicians, including Dr. Souhel Najjar, began to suspect that Cahalan was suffering from an autoimmune disease. Dr. Najjar tested her by having her draw a clock, and this test is typically given to people suspected of having dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Rather than her drawing the clock normally she drew all the numbers from 1 to 12 on the right side of the clock. That was because the right side of her brain, which regulates the left side of her body, was inflamed. This diagnosis helped Cahalan to the road of recovery.
