Image Databases

There are many image search engines on the open web: Flkr, Google Images, etc.  You can search in these by keyword.

For more specialized images, try the following sites:

 

NYTimes.com

Start in the search box in the upper left.

Hit Go, then scroll down to the Image Search Beta Link on the left

Then click on the image you want to open.  It will open in the article it was first published in.

 

 

 

Calisphere

Calisphere is a repository for digital images and documents sponsored by the University of California system.  You can search by keyword or phrase or search collections by topic or era.  When using a phrase, place it in quotes.  Example, "Chavez Ravine."

 

Primary source documents may also be available to use as a resource for your Visual Presentation.

Some of these images may be available full size and some, because of copyright, may be limited to thumbnails. 

For more full sized images, try searching in the Teacher's Classroom Materials.  For example, the following image came from the lesson on the NAACP.

The Smithsonian

Search by keyword, then limit to online images, if images are the only thing you want.  

To save an image:

1. right click, open image in a new window,

2. right click again and choose "save image as."

 

For example, a search for ERA brought up this image of a button made during the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment.

"Inequality" brought up the following image, a window broken during the violence following desegragation of schools in Boston, 1974:
